Being able to successfully stop your vehicle when it is towing something is critical. Having the right brake control helps ensure that the brakes on the vehicle being towed will "react" correctly to what is happening around it. A brake control is an electrical device that is installed inside the vehicle that is doing the towing. When you deploy the brakes of that vehicle, it activates the brakes of the towed vehicle to ensure that you obtain the right kind of reaction.

Choosing the Right Brake Controls

Brake controls come in two broad categories: proportional and time delayed. Understanding the differences between the two can make it easier to make chose the right type for your needs.

Proportional

Proportional brake controls do exactly what their name suggests. The rate at which you apply the brakes of the tow vehicle is the rate at which the brake controls will deliver to the vehicle being towed. This level of intensity is applied whether you are gently braking to accommodate an upcoming curve or you are slamming on the brake to avoid an accident. A brake control that is proportional in nature allows you to adjust the braking power that is delivered as well as its aggressiveness. These factors can be fine-tuned based on your preferences when it comes to braking as well as the weight of the towed vehicle. A proportional brake controller allows you to experience braking that affects the towed vehicle at the same rate as the tow vehicle itself. If you slam on the brake of the tow vehicle a proportional brake controller will trigger the same strong reaction within the towed vehicle.

Time Delayed

The power output and the sync of time delayed brake controls are both factors that are controlled by you. The power output provides a preset intensity while the sync determines the rate of application. As their name suggests, this type of brake control has a built-in element that includes a delay in between the application of the brakes and the time in which the maximum power output of the controller is reached. In order to adjust this delay, you must adjust the sync.
