| When loading bikes on a bike rack, place the heaviest bike in the slot closest to the vehicle to minimize the tongue weight | ||
HitchDepotUSA carries numerous products for towing your bikes or smaller cargo. With so many options, you may be wondering, "Where do I begin?" Below is a list of things you should think about when choosing the right bike rack or cargo carrier to suit your needs.
Things to Consider:
- Bike racks and cargo carriers have a max load rating (weight of the bikes/cargo being carried)
- Bike racks exert a lot of downward force, so it is important NOT to exceed the tongue weight rating of your hitch
- Add the weight of the bikes (cargo) to the weight of the rack (cargo carrier) and this will give the total tongue weight
- Choose the hitch according to two factors:
- Either 1-1/4 or 2 receiver opening
- The tongue weight rating of the hitch
- Class II and class III hitches have superior tongue weight ratings and thus are best suited to carry bike racks and cargo carriers
- Support straps are recommended and often mandatory
