Things to Consider:

• Bike racks and cargo carriers have a max load rating (weight of the bikes/cargo being carried)
• Bike racks exert a lot of downward force, so it is important NOT to exceed the tongue weight rating of your hitch
• Add the weight of the bikes (cargo) to the weight of the rack (cargo carrier) and this will give the total tongue weight
• Choose the hitch according to two factors:
  • Either 1-1/4 or 2 receiver opening
  • The tongue weight rating of the hitch
• Class II and class III hitches have superior tongue weight ratings and thus are best suited to carry bike racks and cargo carriers
• Support straps are recommended and often mandatory
